More Than $210,000 Raised: The Impact of Legacy Race Grants
Since Legacy Race began in 2024, our community has helped raise more than $210,000 to support people affected by breast cancer.
But that number only tells part of the story.
Those dollars become nutritious meals delivered during treatment. Post-surgical garments that make recovery a little more comfortable. Grocery assistance for families facing added expenses. Retreats where survivors can reconnect with themselves and one another. Education that encourages earlier detection. And research that could change how breast cancer is treated in the future.
Through our 2025 and 2026 grant cycles, Legacy Race has been proud to support organizations making a direct impact in Southern Colorado, while also investing in breast cancer research happening right here in Colorado.
Supporting Our Southern Colorado Community
Project Angel Heart
Project Angel Heart received Legacy Race grants in both 2025 and 2026 to help provide nutritious meals to people undergoing breast cancer treatment and their families.
The 2025 grant helped provide more than 3,000 meals, offering practical support during a time when preparing healthy food can become an added burden for patients and caregivers.
Legacy Race's 2026 grant allows this vital work to continue, helping more local families access nourishing meals throughout treatment.
Sisters Hope
Life after breast cancer treatment brings its own challenges. Sisters Hope helps women navigate that transition and find their “new normal.”
With support from the 2025 Legacy Race grant, Sisters Hope provided two retreats for women who had recently completed treatment. The retreats focused on self-reflection, education and identifying positive life changes, with workshops covering yoga, journaling, art as therapy, nutrition, sexuality and other aspects of survivorship.
The 2026 grant continues Legacy Race's support of these retreats, creating opportunities for more survivors to heal, connect and move forward after treatment.
UCHealth
Legacy Race grants to UCHealth focus on meeting some of the practical needs patients experience throughout breast cancer treatment.
In 2025, grant funding helped provide grocery assistance and lymphedema garments to breast cancer patients.
The 2026 grant expands that support by funding post-surgical garments, meal assistance, appointment binders and radiation garments. Each resource is designed to make treatment and recovery a little more manageable and improve patients' quality of life.
CommonSpirit
CommonSpirit received Legacy Race funding in both 2025 and 2026 to provide direct assistance and education to breast cancer patients.
The 2025 grant helped supply post-surgical garments to support comfort and healing after surgery, along with grocery assistance for patients.
In 2026, funding will continue to provide grocery cards while also supporting an educational event for breast cancer patients and healthcare providers.
Peak Vista
Education and early detection are critical parts of improving breast cancer outcomes, and Peak Vista is helping make that information accessible throughout our community.
With its 2025 Legacy Race grant, Peak Vista partnered with community providers and local media to host a public breast cancer awareness event. The organization also provided educational materials in both English and Spanish to more than 4,300 patients, emphasizing the importance of screening and early detection.
The 2026 grant will help support Peak Vista's second breast cancer awareness event, continuing to expand the reach of this important information.
YMCA
New to Legacy Race grant support in 2026, the YMCA is helping breast cancer survivors rebuild strength after treatment through its LIVESTRONG program.
The 2026 grant supports a free, 12-week program for breast cancer survivors who have completed treatment. Participants have the opportunity to regain strength, improve physical fitness and enhance their overall quality of life in a supportive environment.
Image Reborn
Image Reborn is another new Legacy Race grantee for 2026, providing restorative retreats for breast cancer survivors in Colorado.
Legacy Race funding will help provide no-cost, two-day retreats where survivors can build emotional resilience, reduce stress and find meaningful community with others who understand the experience of breast cancer.
The organization plans to offer three retreats in Dillon as well as a retreat in Breckenridge specifically designed for deaf women, helping make survivorship support accessible to more women across Colorado.
Investing in the Future of Breast Cancer Treatment
Legacy Race's impact also extends into research.
In both 2025 and 2026, Legacy Race awarded research funding to the Young Women's Breast Cancer Translational Program at CU Anschutz, led by Dr. Virginia Borges.
The 2025 research grant supported work that identified a gene associated with a dramatically increased risk of distant metastasis among postpartum breast cancer patients.
The 2026 research grant is helping the team expand that work, including research aimed at determining how to move a novel drug toward a Phase 1 clinical trial in the coming years.
Supporting this research gives Legacy Race an opportunity to make an impact beyond today's patients by contributing to work that could help shape future treatment options for a particularly vulnerable population.
