How to raise $100K for a cause I love

When I was asked to write a blog on “How to raise $100K for a cause I love,” I hesitated. I don’t love our cause; in fact, I hate breast cancer. I hate the devastation it brings to families and the suffering it causes. I watched it crumble my mother’s bones and spirit until, after three painful recurrences, it took her life. I didn’t want anyone to ever endure what she went through.

I wished breast cancer—and all cancers—would simply disappear. But, as I quickly realized, wishing wouldn’t accomplish anything. And without a magic wand, I decided to do what I could here in Colorado Springs. I set out to create a local race to battle breast cancer and bring our community together in the fight against this disease.

With the support of the Norris Penrose Foundation, who kindly brought me under their 501(c)(3) wing, and a group of wonderful, dedicated people, we put our plan into action. Everyone I spoke with shared my vision: to bring back a race battling breast cancer in Colorado Springs. With our shared experience and determination, the Legacy Race Battling Breast Cancer was born.

In our first year, the Legacy Race Battling Breast Cancer raised over $110K, and soon, we will grant out $100K to organizations supporting breast cancer awareness, outreach, and patient support right here in Southern Colorado—including 25% dedicated to breast cancer research. Through these funds, we are providing resources and hope to breast cancer patients and their families in Colorado Springs.

How do you raise $100K for a cause you’re passionate about? The short answer to the blog request is: “find a cause that drives you into action and gather a group of wonderful, like-minded people willing to work hard and take payment in hugs.”

Together, you can achieve extraordinary things.
